The Kwara state Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC) has refuted one year election notice rumor and accusations of abandonment of duty’ against members of the Commission’s
Board, by some Civil Society Organizations.
The Commission’s Chairman through the Commissioner in charge of Information, Publicity and Documents, Engr. T. H. Salami, in a statement on Monday said “The Kwara state Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC) wishes to refute claims by some CSO in Kwara state, that the Commission requires a year notice before conduct of Local Government elections. Such claims is not only frivolous, but smacks of innuendos and calculated attempt at misinforming the general public.
“For the sake of clarity, KWSIEC is an independent electoral body, whose responsibilities are not tied to any ‘government actor’, it is therefore preposterous for anyone to lay claim to unsubstantiated information as a basis to castigate an electoral umpire. The Commission, as presently constituted is yet to communicate or issue proclamation of the next local government elections. This is largely due to the time requirement by the Commission to plan a free, fair and credible local government polls that stands the test of confidence and trust of the people, in a way that scheduled dates would not have to be postponed.
“Since assumption of office, the Commission has left no stone unturned in strategically planning and implementing processes that will reposition our electoral system and set a standard stage for the local government polls. In due course, the Commission shall intimate the general public about the timing and processes for the next LG elections in the State.
‘The Commission therefore urge those CSOs making the unfounded claim and accusation to act responsibly by seeking to know, rather than misleading the general public, while assuring Kwarans, including nongovernmental organizations of its openness to collaborations toward achieving a credible State electoral system”, he added.
